Hailing from South Korea, Raissa Sue Kang has lived for over 20 years in France and various English-speaking countries. Today, she presents through her artwork the fruit of her quest to merge her Asian roots with her practice of Western art, which she perfected during her training in Paris.

In her latest work, she uses ink jet, splashes, diffusion and fading on cotton kakemono and rice paper glued on canvas. This dynamic rendering allows her to hint at the shapes of her subject. At the same time, she gives depth to these shapes by superimposing a set of layers to create a transparency that allows the light to oscillate. Emptiness and fullness then take on a particular presence.

Some artwork is in the form of diptychs and triptychs, recalling one of the traditional modes of Korean paintings. For Raissa Sue Kang, this acts as a window on the inner world beyond time and space.
