Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and the rules currently in place to protect the health of Ecolint students and staff, the exhibition "Crossings - Leila Alaoui" scheduled for November 2020 has been postponed to autumn 2021. Thank you for your understanding.
The Centre des arts is pleased to present an exhibition of works by French-Moroccan photographer and video artist, Leila Alaoui (1982–2016). Leila Alaoui’s work explores the construction of identity and cultural diversity through the prism of migration stories that crisscross today’s Mediterranean. Her images express social realities using a visual language at the intersection of documentary storytelling and the aesthetic sensibilities of fine art.
Leila Alaoui’s art has been exhibited in galleries, fairs and biennales internationally since 2009, and featured in publications like The New York Times, Vogue and The Guardian. Her humanitarian engagement involved photographic assignments with NGOs like Search for Common Ground, the Danish Refugee Council and the UNHCR. In 2013, she co-founded with her partner and Ecolint alumnus Nabil Canaan the alternative art space STATION in Beirut.
In January 2016, while on assignment in Burkina Faso for Amnesty International, Leila was amongst the victims of the terrorist attacks in Ouagadougou. The Leila Alaoui Foundation has since been set-up to preserve her work, defend her humanist values and continue inspiring artistic engagement for human dignity.
